As Max Verstappen clinched his fourth consecutive World Drivers’ Championship title in 2024, the season was marred by uncertainty at Red Bull Racing, particularly concerning the future of key personnel like Helmut Marko. Despite the team’s success, it turns out that Verstappen’s actions may have played a pivotal role in securing Marko’s position at Red Bull.

Red Bull’s Turbulent Start to 2024

Before the 2024 season even began, Red Bull Racing was embroiled in a series of controversies that cast a shadow over their championship defense. The drama started with allegations against team principal Christian Horner. Although Horner was later cleared of any wrongdoing, the scandal created a ripple effect that threatened the team’s internal stability.

The tension deepened with Jos Verstappen—Max’s father—voicing concerns about Horner’s leadership, adding fuel to speculation of infighting within the team. Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s legendary designer, also contemplated stepping back from his role following the death of Dietrich Mateschitz, the team’s founder. Amid this turmoil, Helmut Marko, an influential advisor at Red Bull, faced his own crisis. He was under investigation for allegedly leaking confidential information, and his position seemed increasingly tenuous.

Adding to the drama, reports surfaced that Max Verstappen’s contract contained a clause allowing him to leave Red Bull if Helmut Marko were fired. This created additional pressure on the team as they navigated a series of internal challenges.

Max Verstappen’s Key Role in Marko’s Fate

Despite the surrounding turmoil, Verstappen’s loyalty to Marko remained steadfast. In an interview during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Verstappen made it clear that there would be no future for him at Red Bull without Marko. This bold statement was not only a declaration of loyalty but also a direct message to the team’s leadership, reinforcing Marko’s significance within Red Bull.

Marko, in turn, expressed his gratitude towards Max’s support during the Qatar Grand Prix, emphasizing their long-standing relationship. “For me, of course, those words from Max were very nice,” Marko said. “He is one of the greatest sportsmen in the world, earns a lot of money, but above all, he sticks to his principles. That hasn’t changed since he was fourteen years old.”

Did Max Save Marko?

While Verstappen’s support was undoubtedly crucial, Marko was quick to note that several factors contributed to his continued presence at Red Bull. “Did Max save me then? Well, there were more things that played a role,” Marko acknowledged, suggesting that Verstappen’s backing was just one part of a larger picture.

As a result, Helmut Marko’s contract was adjusted to remove the clause that could have allowed Verstappen to leave the team if Marko was dismissed. This change was seen as a move to stabilize Red Bull’s leadership and ensure the team’s future success. According to Marko, this adjustment was made “to lay a foundation for a successful company for the near future,” signaling that both parties were looking ahead to a long-term future together.

Red Bull’s Road Ahead

Despite the internal challenges Red Bull faced in early 2024, Verstappen’s continued success on track and his loyalty to key figures like Marko have helped solidify the team’s position at the top of Formula 1. As they move forward, it seems that Red Bull’s focus is on building a stable and successful future, with Verstappen and Marko continuing to play critical roles in the team’s ongoing dominance.

In the end, Max Verstappen’s loyalty to Helmut Marko may have been a key factor in ensuring stability within Red Bull Racing as they pursue further F1 glory.
