Adrian Newey Faces Setback at Aston Martin After Red Bull ‘Blocked Tools’
Formula 1 design legend Adrian Newey has admitted he will face an uphill battle at Aston Martin after his tools were blocked by Red Bull during his gardening leave. With F1 2026 regulations marking a major shift, Newey acknowledges he is already months behind in preparation.
Newey’s Historic Legacy
Adrian Newey is widely regarded as one of the greatest Formula 1 car designers of all time. With title-winning success at Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull, Newey’s expertise has led to 14 championship victories across Drivers’ and Constructors’ standings. However, his departure from Red Bull signals the start of a new chapter at Aston Martin.
New Role at Aston Martin
Following his shock departure, Newey accepted a deal to become managing technical partner at Aston Martin, with the 66-year-old also receiving shares in the team led by Lawrence Stroll.
Newey will officially join Aston Martin on March 2, 2025, three months after teams are allowed to start working on the massive regulatory reset for F1 2026, including new chassis and power unit rules. Despite his late start, Newey will focus on ensuring Aston Martin’s competitiveness with the upcoming Honda power unit.
Red Bull ‘Blocked Tools’ During Gardening Leave
Appearing on the Autocar podcast, Newey revealed the challenges he faces due to Red Bull’s restrictions. While Newey was allowed to think about innovations, he could not use computer-aided design (CAD) tools to plan or develop concepts.
Newey explained:
“No, they can’t [stop me thinking], but they’ve blocked my tools.”
He emphasized that his main focus will be on the F1 2026 regulations, but admitted starting two months behind others could be a serious handicap. He elaborated:
“The aero rules come out, I think, 1 January, or might be the second. So I’ll already be kind of two months behind the curve.”
He highlighted the complexity of modern F1 regulations, which require detailed CAD modeling to analyze design parameters:
“With the way the regulations have gone, you really need to be in front of a CAD [computer-aided design] system as well, to be able to understand all the boxes and so forth. They’re so prescribed.”
Building a New Team Dynamic
In addition to catching up with technical developments, Newey acknowledged the need to integrate with his new team at Aston Martin:
“It will be getting to know a new team, getting to know all the guys and girls there and how we all work together.”
This adjustment period could prove critical as Aston Martin looks to build a cohesive and effective design team.
High-Profile Signings Bolster Aston Martin
Aston Martin has strengthened its ranks with several high-profile hires. In addition to Newey, the team welcomed Andy Cowell, formerly head of Mercedes’ engine program, as the new group CEO. Enrico Cardile also joined from Ferrari as chief technical officer.
These strategic acquisitions signal Aston Martin’s ambition to become a dominant force in Formula 1.
Conclusion
Adrian Newey’s delayed start at Aston Martin poses a significant challenge as he prepares for the F1 2026 regulations. With Red Bull’s restrictions slowing his preparation, Newey must rely on his vast experience and adaptability to bring Aston Martin to the forefront of the grid. Supported by key hires and a focus on the Honda power unit, the team’s success may hinge on how quickly Newey can close the gap and deliver groundbreaking designs.
