Sergio Perez’s Red Bull Exit Huge Financial and Sporting Benefits Claimed

The Formula 1 world is abuzz with speculation surrounding Sergio Perez’s potential departure from Red Bull Racing ahead of the F1 2025 season. Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has stepped into the debate, questioning Red Bull’s decision to part ways with Perez despite the financial and sporting benefits he has brought to the team.

Perez’s Struggles in F1 2024: A Mixed Season

Sergio Perez’s fourth season with Red Bull was far from ideal. After securing just one podium at the Chinese Grand Prix in April, his performance dwindled, ending the season with 152 points, a stark contrast to Max Verstappen’s 437 points, which secured the Dutchman his fourth consecutive Drivers’ Championship.

Despite Verstappen’s dominance, Red Bull failed to retain their Constructors’ Championship, slipping to P3 behind McLaren and Ferrari. This sparked rumors of Perez’s replacement, but no formal announcement has yet been made.

Montoya Defends Perez: “Where is the Downside?”

Speaking to Vision4Sport, Juan Pablo Montoya highlighted the unexpected benefits of Perez’s presence in the team, even as Red Bull finished third in the Constructors’ standings.

Montoya argued that Red Bull’s lower position grants them more wind tunnel time under Formula 1’s aerodynamic testing regulations, which could prove crucial for their 2026 car development.

“By finishing third, they’re going to get more wind tunnel time for the ’26 car,” Montoya explained. “So is it that bad having Checo there? They have the World Champion and more wind tunnel time!”

Montoya also pointed to Perez’s commercial value, noting the revenue generated through Checo’s merchandise and his appeal in markets like Mexico and Latin America.

“What they’re losing by not winning the Constructors’, they’re probably making up with Checo’s merchandise and Red Bull sales.”

The Financial Standoff: $78 Million on the Line

While Perez’s exit seems inevitable, reports suggest a financial standoff between the two parties over the terms of his departure. According to ex-Bridgestone engineer Kees van de Grint, a split could cost Red Bull up to $78 million, complicating the decision further.

Potential Replacements: Who Will Step Up?

Rumors about Perez’s replacement include Liam Lawson, who impressed with his performances for Racing Bulls, and Yuki Tsunoda, who tested Red Bull machinery during the Abu Dhabi post-season session.

Former Red Bull junior Carlos Sainz was also speculated as a candidate, but Montoya dismissed the idea, citing potential conflicts with Verstappen:

“Red Bull wouldn’t bring in a Carlos Sainz type because the sparks are going to fly.”

Sainz has since secured a multi-year deal with Williams, ending the speculation of a Red Bull reunion.

“We will wait for the result [of the test] before making an announcement of the decision.”

Fans eagerly await news on Perez’s future and the identity of his potential successor as the 2025 F1 grid continues to take shape.

Conclusion: A Bold Decision Ahead

Sergio Perez’s future at Red Bull hangs in the balance, with financial implications, team dynamics, and sporting considerations at play. Whether Red Bull chooses to part ways or retain him, the outcome will significantly influence their F1 2025 campaign and beyond.
