Williams Confirms Carlos Sainz for Post-Season Abu Dhabi Testing

Williams Racing has officially announced that Carlos Sainz will join the team for post-season testing at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi this December. The Spanish driver, currently contracted with Ferrari until the end of 2024, will transition to Williams for the upcoming F1 2025 season, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his Formula 1 career.

Sainz to Test the FW46 Ahead of 2025 Season

After concluding the 2024 season in Ferrari colors, Sainz will switch focus to his new team. The post-season Abu Dhabi test will provide Sainz with his first opportunity to pilot the Williams FW46 and integrate into his new environment.

In their official announcement, Williams highlighted the importance of this early testing session:

“This early opportunity allows both Carlos and Williams to begin building their relationship together ahead of next term. The test session at Yas Marina Circuit will provide a valuable chance for the Spaniard to start integrating into his new team environment, when he drives the FW46 for the first time.”

Precedent for Early Driver Swaps in F1

This move follows a familiar pattern in Formula 1, where drivers transitioning between teams have been allowed early access to their new cars.

  • In 2018, Kimi Raikkonen tested with Alfa Romeo after departing Ferrari.
  • In 2022, Fernando Alonso joined Aston Martin for post-season testing immediately after leaving Alpine.

Similarly, Sainz’s early participation in testing will give both him and Williams a head start in developing their partnership for the 2025 season.

Sainz Joins Williams Amid Driver Market Shakeup

The signing of Sainz comes after lengthy negotiations involving several teams. The move was sealed following the confirmation that Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes to join Ferrari for the 2025 season.

Hamilton, however, will not join Ferrari early for post-season testing, as he is set to engage in pre-planned farewell activities with Mercedes, bringing an end to his 12-season tenure with the Silver Arrows.

Sainz, on the other hand, will form a new driver pairing with Alex Albon at Williams, which the team describes as:

“One of the most formidable driver line-ups on the grid.”

A Mix of Talent and Development

The Abu Dhabi post-season testing serves two key purposes:

  1. Young drivers test current Formula 1 machinery, gaining valuable on-track experience.
  2. Current drivers conduct tyre testing for F1’s supplier, Pirelli, ahead of the next season.

Sainz’s participation will focus on familiarizing himself with Williams’ setup and aiding in early development efforts for their 2025 campaign.

What’s Next for Carlos Sainz and Williams?

With Sainz onboard, Williams aims to continue its upward trajectory in the Constructors’ Championship. The addition of a seasoned driver like Sainz, alongside the talented Albon, could position the team as serious midfield contenders in the upcoming season.
